Treatment of COPD and the TOnado trial: a tempest in a teapot?
نویسنده
چکیده
The treatment of COPD follows a stepwise approach in practically all clinical practice guidelines and also current strategy documents [1]. Lung function impairment or low forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), once considered the single most important treatment parameter, now represents one of the target parameters for risk reduction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alongside exacerbations and respiratory symptoms, dyspnoea in particular. Furthermore, more holistic COPD approaches increasingly recognise the importance of physical activity and multimorbidity for disease outcome, mortality in particular [2].

Efficacy and safety of tiotropium + olodaterol maintenance treatment in patients with COPD in the TONADO® and OTEMTO® studies: a subgroup analysis by age
BACKGROUND Increasing age is associated with poor prognosis in patients with COPD. OBJECTIVE This analysis from the replicate Phase III OTEMTO® and TONADO® studies examined the efficacy and safety of tiotropium, a long-acting anticholinergic, combined with olodaterol, a long-acting β2-agonist, compared to monotherapies and placebo in patients with COPD aged 40 years to <65 years, 65 years to ...
متن کاملThe efficacy and safety of combined tiotropium and olodaterol via the Respimat® inhaler in patients with COPD: results from the Japanese sub-population of the Tonado® studies
BACKGROUND The efficacy and safety of once-daily tiotropium + olodaterol (T+O) maintenance treatment was demonstrated in the large, multinational, replicate, randomized, Phase III, Tonado(®) 1 (NCT01431274) and 2 (NCT01431287) studies in patients with moderate to very severe COPD. However, there may be racial differences in the effects of T+O on lung function in patients with COPD. METHODS In...
متن کاملDownhill walking influence on physical condition and quality of life in patients with COPD: A randomized controlled trial
Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), in addition to its respiratory problems, is accompanied by several musculoskeletal consequences. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of eccentric exercise in the form of downhill walking (DW) on respiratory capacity, physical function and quality of life (QOL) in patients with COPD. ...
متن کاملComparing the Effect of Resistive Inspiratory Muscle Training and Incentive Spirometry on Respiratory Pattern of COPD patients
Background: Resistive Inspiratory Muscle Training (RIMT) is a well-known technique for rehabilitation of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Incentive spirometry is another technique with potential viability for this application, but there is limited evidence in support of its efficacy in the rehabilitation of COPD patients. Aim: The objective of this study was to compar...
متن کاملGZK Violation – a Tempest in a (Magnetic) Teapot?
Faraday rotation measurements are used to constrain simple models representing possible extremes of the structure of extra-galactic magnetic fields (EGMFs). Relevant fields are found quite generally to be at the μG level rather than the nG level usually assumed. Even the highest energy cosmic ray protons should experience large deflections over distances of order 1 Mpc. Such large deflections a...
